Watch Retired Officer Smash Window To Save 4-Month-Old Locked In Hot Car

A newborn baby was lucky to escape with her life after being left locked in a car on a hot day. Fortunately, she was spotted by a retired police officer who was forced to smash the car's window.

A 911 call released by police captures the moment Steve Eckel spotted the child while walking through the car park of a Kohl's department store in New Jersey, New York.
Eckel tells the operator 'I've got an infant in the car, a locked car', before saying that he doesn't want to have to smash the window himself.

However, with the temperature above 25C, he was forced to take matters into his own hands. With the help of another customer, he smashed one of the car's windows with a sledgehammer.

CCTV footage from inside the store shows Eckel carrying the child inside to help it cool off in the air conditioning, an act that first responders say aided the girl's recovery.
