An ingenious inventor has come up with a set of wheels that enable a vehicle to move freely in any direction.
The Liddiard wheels, named after creator William Liddiard, can even rotate the car by 360 degrees on the spot.
Sounds impossible, right? Wrong. The bolt-on wheels roll perpendicular to the car's body and are powered by 24,000 pounds of torque applied directly to the wheel, allowing the driver to manoeuvre the car with extreme precision.
Explaining his invention, Liddiard stressed that it's designed to be used in all weather and road conditions. "They are stronger, faster, and more accurately controlled than prior art," he commented. "They can take a beating."
The technology is showcased in the above video on a Toyota Echo. Liddiard hopes to sell the design to an automotive or tyre company like Goodyear or Honda, who will be able to develop it further.
