A Tesla driver has been caught taking a quick nap behind the wheel – leaving the car's autonomous technology to pilot it through traffic.
Captured in an undisclosed location, the footage sees the driver catching a quick 40 winks while the car's on-board systems take the strain.
It appears that the vehicle's systems are very much in operation, steering the car and slowing it down in the heavy congestion.
The car's functionality is designed to monitor the driver, emitting a sound if it lacks the information to guide itself forwards on its own safely. If the driver ignores the noise, the car will automatically steer to the side of the road and activate the hazard lights.
However, it appears to have not noticed this sleeping driver.
Tesla, who build the Model S in question, gave a statement in response to the video: "Tesla Autopilot is designed to provide a hands-on experience to give drivers more confidence behind the wheel, increase their safety on the road, and make highway driving more enjoyable.
"Autopilot is by far the most advanced system on the road, but it does not turn a Tesla into an autonomous vehicle and does not allow the driver to abdicate responsibility."
