Dashcam footage has revealed the shocking moment a sleeping trucker's 44-tonne vehicle ploughed into a row of cars, leaving the drivers with serious injuries.
The footage, released by Warwickshire Police as a warning to other motorists, was captured on the lorry's own dashboard-mounted camera. It shows in graphic detail how the lorry approached the slow-moving cars at speed before colliding into them.
The driver, Martin Gibson, 54, was travelling along the single carriageway A46 near Stratford-upon-Avon on May 21 last year when his lorry ploughed into 4 cars, one of which spun into a motorcycle on the opposite side of the road.
After the crash, which left several of the drivers with life-changing injuries, it was discovered that Gibson had previously visited a doctor for sleep apnoea.
At a hearing at Warwick Crown Court on April 25, Gibson, from Gloucester, pleaded guilty to five counts of dangerous driving. He was jailed for 15 months, disqualified from driving for three years and one month, and ordered to take an extended driving test.
