BMW has teamed up with Garage Italia Customs to create this – the Futurism Edition i8.
Built to celebrate the German carmaker's 50th anniversary of its history in Italy, the Futurism Edition has been used to display Giacomo Balla's "Lampada ad Arco" painting – the original of which is currently on display in the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
The original painting shows the advent of electricity in the 1900s, with an electric streetlamp shown under the moonlight. It is this awareness of the future that made it the perfect image to use on the body of the ultra-modern i8.
Lapo Elkann, President and founder of Garage Italia Customs, said: "There was immediate synergy with BMW Italia the very first time we met for the i9 Futurism Edition project. Garage Italia Customs and BMW both share, in fact, all the values connected to technology evolution and the continuous search for innovation in their specific sectors.
"The BMW i8 Futurism Edition is a practice of style. It gave the Garage Italia Customs maestros a chance to celebrate a car which is projected towards the future of mobility.
This car will also feature in this year's Mille Miglia, acting as a chase car for a BMW 328 driven by Sergio Solero, President and CEO of BMW Italy. The mechanics of the car remain unchanged, meaning that it still produces around 350bhp through a fully hybrid powertrain.
