A car thief nearly got away with stealing a car with its owner's three-year-old son still in the back seat, before the boy's father rushed to the scene and wrestled the crook.

Captured on CCTV in an Aldi car park on Garrett Way in Gorton, Manchester, the footage shows a man forcing his way into a car after its owner left his wife and two children inside while he went into the store.

Shoving the wife and five-year-old child out of the vehicle, the thief attempts to escape with the woman's three-year-old son still sat in the back.

Thankfully, at that moment the boy's father exits the shop and sprints towards the car.

Jumping into the car, the man manages to wrestle the thief away – although the BMW did crash into another vehicle in the car park.

The offender then escaped from the scene.

After releasing the footage, police are asking for any information regarding the identity of the car thief.

Detective Sergeant Shagufta Khan of GMP's North Manchester division told the Daily Mail: "Fortunately, the family escaped the ordeal without injury and have been extremely courageous by helping us with the investigation.

"This terrifying sequence of events only lasted for a few moments but the psychological implications this could have on the whole family could stay with them for a considerable time.

"I am urging anybody who witnessed the incident to come forward with any information. There were a lot of vehicles and people in the area at the time so the chances are that somebody has seen something to help us with the investigation."
