Ferrari has taken the covers off its new 488 Spider – a folding hard-top version of its new 488 GTB. With a retractable hard top for wind-in-the-hair driving thrills this new model is the most powerful mid-engined V8 Ferrari convertible.
In a break from the Ferrari norm, this new model features a turbocharged motor, but this does mean that the engine is even more mighty than the unit in the open-top version of the 458, which precedes it. Measuring 3.9 litres this motor pumps out a hearty 661bhp at a screaming 8,000rpm – meaning that it should retain the high-rev muscle of the old car – while tipping the scales at 1,525kg.
Helping to channel this power to the Tarmac are 20-inch alloy wheels all around, with whopping 305mm wide tyres at the back. Unsurprisingly, the brakes are similarly large, helping to haul this machine back down from its top speed of 203mph.
With a seven-speed 'F1 dual-clutch transmission' the Spider shouldn't take long to blast up to this speed either, with 62mph flashing past in a mere 3.0 seconds, 124mph passing in just 8.7 seconds, and a kilometre coming up in just 18.9 seconds.
