A 1976 Porsche 930 Turbo once owned by Hollywood legend Steve McQueen is to go under the hammer.

Offered by Mecum Auctions in the United States, the grey coupe is the last car ever ordered by McQueen, who died from cancer just four years after it was delivered.

Just one of his extensive collection of exotic cars, McQueen ordered the 930 Turbo after driving a green example in the racing move Le Mans. For his own model he chose a bespoke grey colour scheme, making this particular Porsche even more unique.

Contributing to the car's whopping sale price of $1.5 million (£959,000) is the fact that the car had some special modifications made by McQueen, including an extra switch on the dashboard for turning off the rear lights – just the thing to get away from the paps (and the police...) on Mulholland Drive.

This is not the first car owned by McQueen to go to auction. Last year his Ferrari GTB 4 fetched a staggering $10.1 million (£6 million), while a standard 1970 Porsche 911 from his collection previously sold for $1.2 million (£830,000).

A portion of the proceeds from the auction will be donated to The Boys Republic School for troubled teens in California, which McQueen attended in his youth.

A Mecum Auctions spokesperson told the Daily Mail: "When a car's history is steeped in so much of what makes the hearts of enthusiasts race with excitement, when every single aspect of a car and its background come together in a perfectly packaged representation of an icon, a role model and hero to many, that car is no longer just a great car.

"It comes to embody the life and legacy of the people behind it, the people who have loved it and given it its place in the spotlight.

"McQueen's insatiable need for speed and his affinity for fine automobiles meant always having the best sets of wheels. His Porsche 930 is no exception.

"A reasonable estimate for this car would be a factor of six to 10 times greater than current 930 Turbo values, however there is even more to take into consideration.

"Not only is this McQueen's last special-order Porsche, this is his last special car period."
