BMW has lifted the covers off its all-new X1 crossover, some four months ahead of its official debut at the Frankfurt motor show.
This second generation of BMW's smallest SUV model is larger in almost every dimension than its forebear and it sports a rugged new look, bringing it closer aesthetically to the larger X3 and range-topping X5 4x4s.
In a nod to its likely use as a school-run bus, the X1's interior has been revised to be more practical, with a less intrusive dashboard and a sliding rear row of seats.
And, at 505 litres, the boot is 85 litres larger than the outgoing model, and with the seats folded down it outguns its closest rival, the Audi Q3, by a substantial 185 litres.
Unlike its predecessor, the new X1 will be available with petrol power, as well as the established range of diesel motors. The engine line-up at launch will include a 189bhp petrol four-cylinder, badged xDrive20i, along with three turbodiesels ranging in power from 148bhp to 228bhp.
An economy-biased three-cylinder diesel model will arrive a few months after the car's showroom debut, and will be available in front-wheel-drive guise only.
The interior is familiar from other models in the BMW range, most notably the 1 Series hatchback. The X1 has the same floating media screen protruding from the dash, and the same handwriting-sensing iDrive controller in front of the gear lever. Standard equipment is improved over the old model, with sat nav now included on all versions.
Full price and specification details for the new X1 will be announced closer to the car's launch in October.
