This is the Audi A8 L Chauffeur special edition (catchy name, no?) – a new ultra-luxurious limited edition model destined solely for the Japanese market.
While it may look near identical to regular versions of the German manufacturer's flagship limousine, the new model is set to be enjoyed by a select few of Japan's elite, with only five examples due to go into production.
Given the Asian market's preference for being driven, rather than driving themselves, the Chauffeur special edition is based on the long wheelbase model and is designed to pamper those in the rear seats with near-obscene levels of opulence.
Aside from the standard toys such as air conditioned, power adjustable rear seats, individual climate control systems and an sophisticated high-end entertainment system, this special edition has been further kitted out with its own minibar, as well as huge rear TV screens, a boot-mounted fridge and individual reading lamps.
Under the bonnet is Audi's 4.0-litre turbocharged V8 petrol motor, which has been carried over unmodified from the standard A8 range. Its 429bhp is sent to all four wheels through the company's Quattro all-wheel-drive system and an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Rather incongruously for a comfort-oriented Chauffeur model, however, Audi has elected to fit this A8 with oversized 20-inch alloy wheels. Whether style has been placed over ultimate comfort remains to be seen...
