Audi has made another breakthrough in its synthetic fuel research by developing "e-benzin", which is produced completely without the use of oil products. This means the high-grade fuel is not only clean, but its maker claims it is also more efficient.
Rather than using crude oil, Audi's chemists, in conjunction with Global Bioenergies, have successfully used isobutene produced from raw renewable materials. Even better than that, because there is no sulphur or benzene, the "e-benzin" is 100 per cent iso-octane and therefore has an outstanding octane rating of RON 100. This means it is suitable for high-compression ratio engines, which are more efficient.
Audi says it's now aiming to modify the production process so that it requires no biomass, and will instead require just water, hydrogen, CO2 and sunlight.
Reiner Mangold, Head of Sustainable Product Development at AUDI AG, said: "Global Bioenergies has demonstrated the viability of the Audi "e-benzin" production process. That is a big step in our Audi e-fuels strategy."
The technology has been in the pipeline for a while, as Audi trademarked the names "e-benzin", "e-gasoline" and "e-diesel" back in 2012. They're now also producing larger quantities of "e-gas", from synthetic methane, on an industrial scale for its customers. Last month, the German manufacturer also revealed its "e-diesel" technology, in which it created the fuel using carbon dioxide.
