European sales of the Nissan Leaf increased by 33 per cent in 2014 compared to the previous year according to the Japanese company, smashing its own record.
With 14,658 sales of the electric hatchback last year Nissan holds more than a quarter of the European electric car market, outselling runner up the Renault Zoe by nearly 3,500 cars.
In the UK just over 4,000 Sunderland-built Leafs found homes, more than doubling the volume sold in 2013 and accounting for 55 per cent of the UK electric car market.
Talking about the car's success Guillaume Cartier, Nissan Europe senior vice president of sales and marketing said: "We can now see the impact that word of mouth is having on our sales, with 95 per cent of our customers happy to recommend their car to a friend and 50 per cent saying they would never for back to diesel or petrol. This kind of powerful advocacy combine with an increasing awareness of the massive running cost savings electric car drivers experience, is why our Nissan Leaf sales continue to grow."
Not only are sales increasing but Leaf owners use their car more than the average driver, Cartier adds: "Data from out CarWings telematics system shows us that Nissan LEAF drivers drive 40% more than the European average for petrol or diesel cars.
The Renault Zoe grabbed second place on the European electrical vehicle sales charts with 11,227 units sold last year, with the Tesla Model S taking third place with 8,734 cars sold. The BMW i3 and Volkswagen e-Up also made it into the top five list.
A total of 56,393 electric passenger cars were sold arcross Europe in 2014.
