There is surely no better way to tell the world that you've made it – whether they want to hear it or not – than by driving a Rolls-Royce. However, for some ultra-wealthy motorists, an off-the-rack Roller is just a bit too common. And tasteful. The answer? The new Rolls-Royce Maharaja Phantom Drophead Coupe.
Created specifically for buyers in Dubai, the Maharaja Phantom is the latest special edition from the west Sussex marque, designed to showcase the skills of its craftsmen – or help shift as many units of the current model before the all-new Phantom arrives in 2017, depending on your viewpoint.
Rolls-Royce describes the new car as taking inspiration from "the Golden Age of the Raja" – a period of 50 years in which India's rulers decidedly fell in love with the iconic British marque, purchasing a total of 840 different models.
"Dubai is the only market in the world to receive this extraordinary, one-of-a-kind bespoke Phantom Drophead Coupe, which has been two years in the making – not only an incredible coup for us, but also a strong reflection of the importance that Rolls-Royce Motor Cars places on this market," said Osman Abdelmoneim, General Manager at AGMC, Rolls-Royce's showroom in Dubai.
Paying homage to the national bird of India, the peacock, Rolls' craftsmen have adorned the Maharaja with a number of peacock motifs, from the hand-applied coach-line that runs the length of the vehicle, to the marquetry present on both the glove-box and the car's rear teak decking. The detailed woodworking also extends to the door inlays and arm rests.
