Big off-roaders are big business, and with a huge number of these oversized machines on UK roads, buyers are fighting to stand out with ever more powerful versions.
The latest super off-roader to hit our streets is the Cayenne GTS – a 434bhp behemoth that can launch from 0-62mph in a scant 5.2 seconds. This may lag behind the Cayenne Turbo at 4.5 seconds – and the even more monstrous BMW X5 M which thunders past the benchmark speed in just 4.2 seconds – but the track-biased GTS is "especially dynamic" according to Porsche.
The Cayenne GTS offers a sharpened driving experience and strong performance, giving buyers the feel of a sports car in a high-riding, four-door shell. Making up 11 per cent of past Cayenne sales, this popular variant now packs a twin-turbocharged 3.6-litre V6 engine, which offers up an extra 20bhp over its V8 predecessor while boosting fuel economy.
Thanks to the extra power and torque on tap, the new GTS slashes the 0-62mph time of the outgoing version by up to 0.6 seconds. Despite its bluff profile this beast can power on to an autobahn-friendly 162mph. With a standard-fit sports exhaust this Porsche should leave other road users in no doubt as to the power under the bonnet either, with a deep, baritone exhaust note.
The GTS also receives an updated body kit and chunky 20-inch tyres plus tell-tale GTS lettering on its flanks. As for the inside, the GTS is fitted with body-hugging electrically adjustable leather and Alcantara sports seats.
The new Porsche Cayenne GTS is available to order now from £72,523 and will make its world debut at the Los Angeles motor show on November 19. Customers will also receive the chance to test their new purchase out at Silverstone's Porsche Experience Centre for free.
