The Porsche 911 RS Carrera 2.7 has been named as the best car to invest in over the last ten years, according to new research by the Discovery Channel.

To mark the 100th episode of its 'Wheeler Dealers' program, in which automotive celebs Mike Brewer and Edd China restore classic cars in an attempt to turn a profit, the network analysed the price history of the 20 best known and most sought after classic cars on the market over the last 10 years, and have come up with a top ten ranking of the best performing vehicles.

It seems those who sunk their cash into a Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 ten years ago are the ones who were the most savvy. The iconic Porsche model has seen prices rise massively from £65,000 in 2004 to a staggering £500,000 today – representing appreciation of 669 per cent.

Owners of classic Aston Martins will be feeling equally pleased with themselves, with the iconic DB5 and DB6 models enjoying 500 per cent and 478 per cent increases in value respectively.

The rest of the top ten list was littered with iconic vehicles, from the AC Cobra to the Series 1 Land Rover, each of which have steadily risen in value over the last ten years.

Of the 20 cars evaluated by the Discovery Channel, only one had depreciated over the ten year period: the Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow, which fell in price from £12,000 to £8,000.

A Discovery Channel spokesperson said: "From the much coveted Aston Martin DB5 to the humble Fiat 500, classic car owners across the UK are sitting on a small fortune, thanks to the boom in the vintage car market over the last decade."
