Mercedes has just unveiled a new super-saloon to replace the company's most popular AMG performance model ever. This new car adds a dose of extra power and agility – along with a 32 per cent jump in claimed fuel economy.
This 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 AMG C-Class monster gets a new name too – the Mercedes-AMG C 63. Despite the downsized engine, power swells to 470bhp in "standard" form, while the C 63 S offers a faintly ludicrous 503bhp.
Thanks to the muscular motor under the bonnet, this new car launches from a standstill to 62mph in just 4.0 seconds, with even the estate version needing a scant 4.1 seconds in C 63 S form – making it the fastest ever AMG C-Class. The less powerful cars only require an extra tenth of a second for the benchmark sprint.
Helping to keep this rapid machine on the road, it gains new suspension including adjustable dampers and a bespoke steering set-up – plus a mechanical locking rear differential for maximum traction. The brakes are also suitably beefed up, with hefty 390mm front discs and 360mm discs at the rear, and even more powerful ceramic discs available as an option. The gearbox has also been tweaked for faster shift times.
The new model additionally receives suitably bold exterior styling with new front bumpers, bonnet and an AMG grille, along with wider front wings to contain the increased front track – plus four exhaust pipes around the back. Inside there is a small AMG steering wheel in addition to deeply contoured sports seats, which should hold driver and passengers firmly in place.
Despite the huge performance, Mercedes claims that the C 63 is viable as an everyday car, with economy jumping to a surprising 34.5mpg for the saloons and 33.6mpg for estate models. Car tax is also impressively reasonable, weighing in at £265 under the current system.
These new models are available to order in the UK from next month, with both cars arriving in spring 2015. Prices and specifications are yet to be confirmed.
