Ford has released the first official images of the brand new S-Max MPV, ahead of its public debut at next month's Paris motor show.

Due to arrive in UK showrooms next summer, with prices starting from around £25,000, this second generation model will be offered with seven seats as standard, as well as a more practical interior, a new range of engines and the option of four-wheel-drive on some models.

While it shares much of its design DNA with the previous S-Max, the front-end styling has been refreshed to include the current Ford style themes, including the sculpted headlights and trapezoidal grille arrangement, as seen on the recently face-lifted Fiesta and Focus models.

And, despite being roughly the same size as the outgoing model, the new S-Max boasts a much-improved interior layout, and features practical touches such as power-folding seats in the second and third rows and a hands-free tailgate, operated by waggling a foot underneath the rear bumper. Passenger safety is also up with new side airbags protecting those in the middle row.

As the S-Max is now facing plenty of upmarket competition – not least the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer – the number of toys available has grown considerably. Buyers will be able to specify such niceties as adaptive steering, heated and cooled massage seats and active park assist, as well as the usual plethora of electronic safety aids, including blind spot monitoring and automatic collision detection.

Engine details are yet to be confirmed, but expect the S-Max to be offered with a 2.0-litre diesel in a range of power outputs, with a choice of six-speed manual or dual-clutch automatic transmissions. Ford's petrol Ecoboost engines are also likely to make an appearance, in 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre guises.
