Is this the world's most menacing police car?

When it comes to police pursuits our American cousins show us how to do it, with every car chase involving dozens of brutal V8 saloons powersliding around corners and hundreds of foul-mouthed, gun-toting officers – if you believe the movies, that is. In comparison UK police cars feel a little under-endowed when it comes to hot pursuits.

The latest vehicle helping US law enforcers to slam more and more baddies behind bars, is the 2015 Dodge Charger Pursuit. Now there's a name to put the fear of god into miscreants from across the US-of-A.

According to Dodge this machine is packed with "performance and factory-installed tactical equipment" and has new styling which draws on the car's 1960s heritage. Dodge bods goes as far as to say that the car has a "superhero stance" – we'll let you be the judge of that.

It's powered by a potent 5.7-litre Hemi V8 engine, which punches out 365bhp and fires the Charger Pursuit from a standstill to 60mph in under six seconds.

The Pursuit is available with rear-while-drive for Hollywood-grade powersliding and all-wheel-drive to cope with winter snow. In V8 form the new Charger has set the fastest ever lap time at the Michigan State Police Vehicle Evaluation event. Nice. A 3.6-litre V6 with a measly 288bhp is also being built, probably for lollipop ladies...

Special police performance mods include toughened up sports suspension with load-levelling shock absorbers, heavy-duty "pursuit-rated" brakes and best of all seriously cool 18-inch black steel wheels.

Other special kit includes "police-duty front seats with unique bolstering to accommodate officers' belt-mounted gear," which are also steel-backed to stop criminals from shaking officers' seats like an annoying child on a plane. The electrics are also beefed up to deal with all the added flashing lights and sirens.

Tim Kuniskis, President and CEO of Dodge said: "Dodge has a strong police car heritage, and we are proud to offer a vehicle armed with modern muscle and cutting-edge technology to help law enforcement agencies perform their duties."
