Teen run over

First dates can be fraught affairs, though as disaster stories go few of us will be able to top Jay Harris, who was run over while taking a lady out in Huddersfield last Saturday.

The 18-year-old Casanova is lucky to be alive after being hit by a Nissan Qashqai crossover, which occurred as he slipped and fell on a pelican crossing.

Speaking to The Mirror, Jay said: "I can't believe all this happened on a first date.

"It had been raining so the roads were slippy.

"We crossed the road at a pelican crossing. The green man was flashing but I slipped in the middle of the road and when I got up I was hit by a car, that I can only presume had set off because the lights had changed."

Jay's clothing got caught as the car rolled over him, and he was dragged along the road for 100ft while his girlfriend ran after the vehicle in a vain attempt to get the driver to stop.

He was left trapped under the car for 10 minutes before eventually being rescued by firefighters, who used air bags to lift the vehicle off him.

The teenage shop assistant was left with serious injuries, including a broken pelvis and dislocated shoulder.

Jay commented: "I was in such pain, but I was conscious throughout and I knew what was happening to me.

"I really thought I was a goner. I thought my life was over. I literally felt my bones crack under the pressure of the car.

"I'm lucky that it was a busy Saturday night and there were plenty of people about to stop the car.

"I'm lucky that I am alive."

Jay has since been discharged from hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. Police have stated that no one has currently been arrested in connection with the collision.
