Dodge announces 'most powerful muscle car ever'

US carmaker Dodge previously teased that its latest Challenger muscle car model would have a 600bhp engine. It seems they might have outdone themselves, as the final version boasts a shocking 707bhp.

It's this figure that makes the Challenger SRT Hellcat not only the most powerful muscle car ever, but also the most powerful mass produced car ever to emerge from a US factory.

The Hellcat's supercharged 6.2-litre V8 engine even tops the likes of Lamborghini Aventador and Pagani Zonda in terms of outright grunt - cars with price tags many times that of the blue collar Dodge.

Further details are currently thin on the ground, but we do know that the Hellcat will develop a staggering 880 Nm of torque, meaning any owner will quickly become good friends with their local tyre dealer.

Chrysler has't released the car's full specification but has revealed that the full 707bhp will only be available if you use the special red key fob. The car will also come with a black key fob that limits the car to 500bhp - just the thing if you're planning on lending it to your teenage children.

The Dodge Challenger Hellcat reaches showrooms on the other side of the pond later this year, though British muscle car fans are likely to be disappointed, as the US marque currently has no plans to offer it in the UK.
