Volkswagen XL1 UK pricing announced

Volkswagen has announced UK pricing for its revolutionary new eco-car the XL1. The new model is available from £98,515.

The XL1 comes from Volkswagen's aim to create a car that could travel up to 100km on a single litre of fuel – equating to 282mpg. Thanks to its innovative hybrid drivetrain, which mates a 0.8-litre two-cylinder diesel engine to an electric motor for a combined power output of 74bhp, it exceeds this target.

While the puny power figure is unlikely to excite performance fans, those who are more interested in running costs will be impressed by the XL1's official combined fuel consumption figure of 313mpg. CO2 emissions are also very low at just 21g/km.

These are aided in no small part by the car's aerodynamic shape, which follows the classic teardrop structure. To make it as slippery as possible, the rear wheels have been fared in and the wind-catching wing mirrors replaced with small cameras that transmit rear views to small displays built inside the doors.

In keeping with its futuristic outlook, the XL1 sits low to the ground and features scissor-doors for the full sci-fi effect.

Only 200 XL1s will be produced, and most have already been snapped up – helped by the car being showed on the VW stand at last weekend's Goodwood Festival of Speed, which saw two customers sign on the dotted line there and then, according to a VW spokesperson.

XL1 Product Manager Lianne McKnight said: "Enthusiasm for the XL1 has been building since the first concept of the car was unveiled in Qatar in January 2011. Knowing that production of our cars is now underway and that customers will soon be taking delivery of them is very exciting. We're looking forward to seeing this record-breaking model on UK roads, as well as seeing technologies within it filtering down to many of our mainstream Volkswagen cars."
