Police in California have arrested a driver employed by popular car service app Uber, for allegedly kidnapping a drunk clubber.

The 26-year-old party goer was fondled by the driver after he drove her 17 miles away from a nightclub in West Hollywood, police said.

She woke up in an unknown motel room and raised the alarm by dialing 911 from a nearby convenience store.

When officers arrived at the scene, the driver, 32-year-old Fredrick Dencer, was still in the room and was arrested on suspicion of kidnap for the purpose of sexual assault.

However, the unidentified woman has yet to make a formal allegation of sexual assault.

An LAPD spokesman told ABC7 News: "Once in the car she couldn't express her address, where she lived.

"He ends up taking her to this motel miles from her home, miles from his home... There was some fondling through her clothes, suggesting what he wanted.

"She said no, and in the morning when she awoke and she wanted to leave he did not stop her from leaving.

"After several stories he confirms that he is an Uber driver."

It was initially thought that the victim had arranged the lift through Uber herself, though it later emerged that Dencer was flagged down by staff at a nightclub, explaining why he didn't have the lady's address before she got in the car.

Uber confirmed that it had suspended Dencer's account, and released the following statement: "The facts are unknown at this stage and it's certainly unclear that this is an Uber-related incident.

"We have reached out to authorities and will work with them to help uncover the facts.

"It is also our policy to immediately suspend a driver's account following any serious allegations, which we have done. Nothing is more important to Uber than the safety of our riders."

Uber has also been the cause of controversy on this side of the Pond, with London taxi drivers staging protests in the capital due to fears that it could put them out of business.
