The vandal with a taste for tyres

Car owners dogged by mystifying attacks on their tyres have finally discovered the offender – a border collie called Jess.

Residents in the market town of Brampton in Cumbria had been left baffled over the past few months by a series of nearside slow punctures and completely flat tyres, according to a report in The Mirror.

Police were similarly puzzled by the string of damage reports, and the problem got so bad that some residents resorted to putting in CCTV to try to snare the vandal.

However, after scrutinising the CCTV footage, PC Simon Amos noticed that a dog being walked was actually biting the tyres of parked cars that it originally appeared to be just smelling.

The officer said: "The dog had been seen approaching the cars and many believed that she was just sniffing the tyres.

"It is not until you take a closer look that you can see her biting them. The owner has been contacted and was very surprised and apologetic. He will now be keeping Jess on a lead."

Jess's owner has not been named, to spare his embarrassment. However, he has said he will cover the costs of the damage caused by his mischievous mutt.

A police spokeswoman said there had been 10 vandalism reports but other incidents were possible as the owners may have simply thought they had a slow puncture.

"We know that there may be other residents or visitors that may not have reported any damage to their tyres.

"We want to reassure them that the culprit has been identified. Hopefully the damage will stop," she said.
