BMW reveals muscular new X4 model

The Geneva motor show served as the perfect stage for BMW to showcase its new muscular BMW X4, which will go on sale in July.
> The X4 follows in the footsteps of its bigger brother the X6 and borrows a number of styling cues from the larger SUV while offering a much tighter, smaller and more affordable package.

BMW has attempted to combine the character of a bulky 4x4 with the classic coupe design of smaller models such as the 4 Series.

The X4 is built on the same platform as the X3 but sits 36mm lower to the ground, therefore offering a more dynamic and agile profile.

The X4 will be available with three different engines, all of which are of the oil-burning variety.

The smallest of these is the 2.0-litre, 190bhp lump in the XDrive 20d that will sprint from 0 to 62mph in 8.0 seconds. Mated to the optional 8 speed automatic transmission, it will also manage 54.3mpg on the combined cycle.

The mid-range engine is a 3.0-litre unit in the xDrive30d model that develops a power output of 258bhp. The 0 to 62mph sprint can be achieved in 5.8 seconds and the top speed is an impressive 145mph.

The xDrive 35d M Sport model at the very top of the range comes with an almighty 313bhp and launch control as standard.

Fuel economy figures are a respectable 47.1mpg on the combined cycle but the machine is considerably faster than its counterparts. The 0 to 62mph dash only takes 5.2 seconds and the powerful engine will continue to rocket its occupants to 153mph.

Standard kit on the range-topping models includes an automatically opening tailgate, Variable Sport Steering, 18-inch light-alloy wheels, front and rear Park Distance Control and Xenon headlights.

Prices start at £36,590 for the xDrive 20d and rise to £48,990 for the xDrive35d M Sport.
