A police chase in the US has reached a violent conclusion, leaving one man dead.

51-year-old Bryan Newt Baird, of Oceanside, Los Angeles, died trying to evade a string of police cars in a high-powered Chevrolet Corvette sports car.

The chase began at around 9pm (local time) on Friday in East Los Angeles, with police attempting to stop the silver two-seater for reckless driving and on suspicion that the driver was intoxicated.

The hour-long chase saw police from two separate forces pursue the car, which was also being pursued by helicopter.

It all ended in a violent crash in South Los Angeles when the Corvette slammed into another car at a crossroads, before leaving the tarmac and hitting a fire hydrant on Olympic Boulevard.

Baird was then shot by police officers as he stumbled from the car and apparently tried to flee on foot. He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. It is not yet know why officers opened fired.
