A young driver, who described himself as the luckiest man alive after walking away from a severe car crash, has avoided a prison sentence over the incident.
> Ashley Locker, 22, of Scarborough, North Yorkshire, was three times over the drink-drive limit when he crashed into a tree, leaving his MG ZR hatchback near folded in half.
Locker escaped with just a broken arm and a severe cut to his foot, with doctors crediting his large 18-stone frame with saving his life. It was only a matter of luck that no one else was hurt.
Now, road safety campaigners have reacted furiously after the foolish driver escaped a custodial sentence, leaving court with no more than a two year driving ban and 100 hours community service.
Locker was not even fined, though was made to pay £85 in costs.
Speaking to The Sun newspaper, Campaign Against Drinking and Driving spokesperson Carole Whittingham, said: "We need to send a stronger message, which Christmas behind bars would have done."
