Tuning house reveals most powerful MX-5 to date

Updated:

Specialist Mazda tuning house BBR has taken the wraps off a new turbocharging kit that transforms the usually timid MX-5 into a 268bhp Porsche Boxster-baiting beast.

The BBR-tuned MX-5 with GT270 turbo pack is capable of covering the 0-60mph sprint in just 4.9 seconds and can hit a hair-raising top speed of 150mph.

Modifications include fitting a new turbocharger to the 2-litre engine of a MY2013 Mazda MX-5 that increases power by astonishing 110bhp over the standard figures to 268bhp. Torque is also pumped up to 307Nm.

To tackle the decreased fuel economy figures that naturally come with bolting on an enormous turbocharger, BBR has installed four pre-set driving modes that override the ECU mapping and can limit the delivery of power.

Customers can also opt for an exhaust silencer that brings the noise levels down to track-compliant outputs and ensures neighbours aren't driven around the bend every time it is fired up on a cold morning.

Uprated suspension and upgraded brakes are also available at an extra cost but those in the market for an extremely hot MX-5 can purchase the BBR-tuned model for as little as £29,995 with a 12-month, 30,000 mile warranty.

That price may seem steep but considering a new Porsche Boxster, with almost 5bhp less than the Mazda, costs £38,237 in its most basic form, it could be construed as a little performance bargain.
