One of the best ways of going terrifically fast in the most opulent of surroundings just got better.
That's because Mercedes-Benz has just released its range-topping S-Class: the S65 AMG.
Mercedes had already released a fairly quick S-Class in the form of the 577bhp S63 AMG but, as per the previous generation model, it seems that wasn't quite enough for the three-pointed star.
Hence the arrival of the S65, which can boast a massive 621bhp power output – not to mention a monstrous 737lb ft of torque.
As you might expect, performance isn't an issue: 62mph comes up in a shade over four seconds, while the top speed is electronically restricted to 155mph.
Under the bonnet sit a 6.0-litre V12 with not one, but two turbos bolted onto it. It also features a raft of exotic features, such as an aluminium crank case, a forged crankshaft, multi-spark ignition, and an air-to-water intercooler.
Drive comes through just the rear wheels, through AMG's Speedshift Plus 7G-Tronic gearbox.
The S65 AMG will also feature as standard the remarkable Magic Body Control feature that's available elsewhere in the S-Class range.
As you'd expect, the interior is replete with luxurious trimmings and cutting-edge technology, with a raft of standard features and, should your wallet be able to bear the brunt, a plethora of options also available.
Of course, a chunky wallet will be required simply to own the S65 AMG in the first place – UK pricing has yet to be released, but expect it to cost somewhere in the region of £150,000.
