British-built car in the running for World Car of the Year 2014

Inside Europe's largest Mini dealership

A shortlist for 2014's World Car of the Year (WCOTY) has been drawn up and understandably it is dominated by Japanese, German and American manufacturers – all of which have made huge efforts to create more affordable, fuel efficient and desirable products over the last few years.

Korean manufacturers also feature heavily on the list with models such as the Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Soul tipped to perform well.

Just one vehicle on the list is hand-built here in the UK and that is the humble Mini – the best-selling hatchback that has seen a huge revival since BMW took over.

Volkswagen – a marque that has won the coveted title on more occasions than any other manufacturer – failed to make it onto the list this year but sister companies Audi, Seat and Skoda have been nominated.

The first round of voting for 66 WCOTY jurors from 21 countries will take place on February 4.

The World Car of the Year will be announced at the New York International Auto Show in April 2014.
