A new survey carried out by Auto Express and The Telegraph Motoring has asked more than 46,000 motorists to dish the dirt on their insurance companies.
The questionnaire asked respondents to rate their respective insurance companies on the following five areas: communication, speed to settle a claim, helpfulness, value for money and overall service.
Many of Britain's best-known car insurance providers, such as Swiftcover, Churchill and More Than scored poorly, wallowing in the bottom quarter of the 40-strong table.
Topping the table was NFU Mutual, with customers praising its local customer service, rather than having to talk to a call centre, as well as the company's efficiency.
More than 97 per cent of customers said they would renew their NFU Mutual policy, even though it is not the cheapest insurer.
In the relegation zone were Highway, Swiftcover and Diamond, with the latter criticised for errors appearing on policies as well as one respondent having to wait two years for a claim to be resolved.
The study also included a 'mystery shopper' element, where journalists contacted all of the insurers featured on the list to find the lowest premiums for a 25-year-old sales manager driving a Ford Fiesta, a 40-year-old publicity manager driving a Vauxhall Insignia and a 55-year-old dentist driving a BMW 530d.
