As anyone caught in a compromising position will tell you, coming up with an excuse is tricky. Wracking your increasingly flummoxed brain for a plausible explanation in the shock of being caught out can be extremely difficult.
And so it turned out for one Walsall man, who when questioned by police as to the reason why there was a prostitute in his car, told them she was showing him where he could buy some tomatoes.
Muhammed Ikhlaq was spotted by police in his Nissan Micra on Wednesbury Road, Walsall, with a known sex-worker.
When approached by police at a cashpoint, he told them he was withdrawing £20 to buy the fruit, and that the lady of the night in his passenger seat was helping him find some.
His excuse obviously didn't wash, as Ikhlaq was later found guilty of soliciting at Walsall Magistrates Court and was fined £400.
He was also ordered to pay £665 in costs.
Speaking to the BBC, PC Stacey Paterson from Walsall police, said: "I've heard some excuses before but in the 10 years that I have been a police officer I have never heard a kerb crawler covering up his crimes by claiming to be buying tomatoes.
