The forthcoming Mercedes-Benz S-Class is already causing quite a stir among motoring aficionados as it is set to raise the bar of quality and craftsmanship in the luxury saloon sector.
Ticket holders for the recent Goodwood Festival of Speed were treated to an up-close-and-personal unveiling, where punters were allowed to sample the exquisitely crafted interior first hand, but Mercedes is saving the most delicious news morsel until last.
A high performance S 63 AMG iteration is on the horizon and it is set to pack a monstrous 5.5 litre V8 biturbo engine that produces an eye-watering 583bhp.
The all-out grunt coupled with 900Nm torque ensures the elegant missile sprints to 62mph from a standstill in just 4.4 seconds.
Reducing weight is the key to the big cruiser's performance figures with the S 63 AMG featuring liberal use of aluminium in both the bonnet and roof of the vehicle.
This metallic diet coupled with cutting-edge engine technology makes it the most economical high-performance saloon on the market, with a claimed fuel economy figure of 27.9mpg on the combined cycle.
Inside, the big S 63 remains as luxurious as its less powerful cousin, with swathes of fine nappa leather covering most surfaces and new TFT displays modernising the controls.
Engineers have also worked hard to ensure the S 63 remains true to its luxurious roots and doesn't stray too far into hypercar territory.
One clever touch is a new sports exhaust system that cuts out all cabin-piercing engine note in 'Comfort' mode, yet can be overridden in 'Sport' mode, allowing the bellowing V8 to scream.
The Mercedes-Benz S 63 AMG will make its official debut at the Frankfurt International Motor Show in September.
