Do you remember when car adverts used to be good? Citroen made its models transform into robots and dance to funky music.
Honda spent £1million on a chain of colliding parts that enthralled a nation during the 2003 Brazilian Grand Prix, Renault took the Michael out of itself by including Vic & Bob in its final Clio campaign and even Castrol managed to make oil interesting by taking the viewer on a rollercoaster ride through an engine.
Nowadays, it seems all you need to sell a car is a pop star and a few dynamic driving shots.
Luckily, this lacklustre approach to advertising has not been adopted by the Germans as a new television spot for the Mercedes-owned Smart ForTwo happily reveals.
The honest ad - released earlier this year - shows just how useless a Smart car is at tackling the loose surfaces, steep hills and deep fjords of off-road driving. But also just how useless a 4x4 is at tackling the tight parking spaces of the big city.
