British supercar manufacturer McLaren has announced its forthcoming P1 hypercar will have an incredible 903bhp.
That astonishing power figure is all the more impressive when you find out the P1 will only emit 200g/km of Co2 – around the same as a Renaultsport Clio, despite having over FIVE times the power.
The massive amount of power comes from a combination of a 727bhp twin-turbo 3.8-litre V8 and a Formula One derived electric motor, called IPAS (Instant Power Assist System), which can provide an extra 176bhp with instant response.
All that power gets channelled through the dual-clutch seven-speed gearbox and sent to the rear wheels. Maximum torque for the P1 is a tyre-shredding 900Nm.
The P1 is packed with technology and obsessive attention to detail.
Negative torque from the electric motor is applied to the engine during upshifts, dropping the revs instantly and allowing gearshifts to be near instantaneous.
The rear wing has a Drag Reduction System (DRS) operated by a button on the steering wheel like McLaren's F1 car, and the car can be driven for up to six miles on electric power alone.
McLaren states the P1 will be "the best driver's car in the world on road and track", but fierce competition will come from both Porsche and Ferrari who have their own hybrid hypercars in development.
The production version of the McLaren P1 will make its public debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March, with pricing yet to be announced.
