The Ford Focus was the best-selling car in November, new figures show.

According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the Blue Oval shifted 7,495 units of the much-loved hatchback.

Hot on its heels was its baby brother the Ford Fiesta which found 7,483 homes. The Vauxhall Corsa came home in third with 6,164 units.

Moving down the top ten list, the Volkswagen Golf was in fourth with 5,165 models sold; fifth was the Vauxhall Astra (5,032); sixth the Nissan Qashqai (3,403); followed by the BMW 3 Series with 3,238; the BMW 1 Series in eighth (3,135); Mercedes' C-Class finished ninth (2,901) and the Mini (2,787) in 10th.

In total, 149,191 new cars were plated up in November – meaning the UK car market is now the second largest in Europe, down to a combination of our growth and a drop in demand across other big markets.

The market has also grown 5.4 per cent in the January to November period – something the SMMT says puts this year's performance on track to be the "best since 2008".

SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt said: "The upward trend has been driven by private retail customers.

"The outlook for 2013 remains challenging, but vehicle manufacturers and their dealers will continue to work hard to attract motorists to their showrooms and deliver outstanding value."
