The new Volkswagen Beetle Cabriolet has made its debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show and is the maker's third version of the iconic car since it first introduced with the original Beetle in 1949.

The latest Beetle hard-top model keeps to the original's silhouette - as does the cabriolet. But where the previous generation was a modern interpretation of the classic car, the new, third generation is altogether more sporty and purposeful.
Compared to the second generation Beetle Cabriolet, introduced in 2002, the new car is 29mm lower, 152mm longer and 84mm wider. To go with the sporty looks are a range of engines, all of which are turbocharged.

There are three petrols to choose from, including a 1.2-litre with 103bhp, a 1.4-litre with 156bhp or a 2.0-litre with 197bhp. There are also two diesels: A 1.6-litre with 103bhp and a 2.0-litre with 136bhp.

To go with the five-engine range are four gearboxes: Two manuals, with five- or six-speeds, and two DSG automatics, with six- or seven-speeds.

Three trim levels are on offer - "Beetle", "Design" and "Sport" - but regardless of the trim level you choose, you get a good amount of standard kit. This includes air-con, remote central locking, a DAB radio with CD player, Isofix child seat mounts, rear spoiler and an electric folding roof, which can be raised or lowered on the move in under 11 seconds.

The new Beetle Cabriolet is available to order now priced from £18,150, and will arrive in the UK in Spring 2013.
