It's on a plate... for Warren Carter

If your name's Warren Carter, and you fancy adding a personal touch to the cars you own, read on.

More than 4,000 people have registered to take part in a three-day auction of personalised registration plates which starts on Thursday.

And two of the plates up for grabs are WA 12 REN and CA12 TER (both priced at £1,000).

The event, organised by DVLA Personalised Registrations, is being held over three days at Mercedes-Benz World in Surrey.

And with the huge number of people showing an interest, it certainly seems more and more motorists are keen to get their hands on a private plate.

It could be that the lure of a free "hot lap" ride in a range-topping Mercedes for registered bidders is a contributing factor, but it's also thought the success of an Olympic-themed auction staged in June played a part.

DVLA Personalised Registrations' marketing manager, Damian Lawson, said: "Personalised registrations have always been extremely popular with British motorists and our new stance of holding auctions in venues like Mercedes-Benz World, which offer a super day out for all the family, is clearly proving successful.

"But I firmly believe the resurgence in the number of registered bidders prior to a sale is linked to the success of our Olympic-themed auction prior to the Games.

"The Olympic-themed auction – which featured 1,750 registrations and amassed more than £4 million – stirred up huge interest so who knows, this week's sale could be a continuation of that."

The deadlines to register to bid either online or over the telephone have now passed. Anyone wishing to bid at the auction will now have to do so in one of the following two ways: in person, or by placing an absentee bid online via up to one hour before the lot is offered.

Some of the other plates up for grabs include DEE 516N (£300), E50 AMG (£500), FA12 REL (£1,000), GA11 ERY (£1,000), GA12 RYS (£900) and GYM 80X (£400).
