8,000 drink drivers mistakenly given back licences

Updated

In a large and especially badly timed blunder, it's been discovered that over the last two decades, thousands of convicted drink drivers were given back their licences without having gone through the proper medical checks.

The revelation is the result of a Department for Transport (DfT) enquiry, requested by Road Safety Minister Mike Penning, which has found that at least 8,000 drink drive offenders are back on the road that shouldn't be.
