Aston Martin has conceded that the sales of its new city car, the Cygnet, have not met with their expectations, but the company blames the time taken to build the car is the problem.
The car, a £31,000 reworking of the Toyota IQ, went on sale earlier this year. However company chairman Ulrich Bez said that customer impatience had hit sales.
"I'm not satisfied with Cygnet sales," said Bez to Autocar magazine. "We can't deliver as many as the customers want, as we don't have enough stock. It is the sort of product a customer sees and decides they want on the spot – they don't want to have to wait for their car to be built, but to drive it away there and then."
However, he said that the rebadging of a much cheaper Toyota was not damaging to the Aston Martin brand, insisting that the small car was not a low-quality vehicle.
"I don't know why people criticise this. It's a luxury piece, a great car to go around town in. Why would you take a Vantage through London when you could have this?" he said.
Personally, we'd take a Vantage through London over a Cygnet any day, but maybe that's just us - what do you reckon?
