Megan Ashton arrived in style at her wedding recently, by rocking up in a classic Porsche 356.
But Megan's immaculate Porsche was no ordinary one – she built it herself, using a knackered old Volkswagen Beetle as the base.
The project took six years in total, but it took on some urgency when her now-husband popped the question in 2009, and Megan, a 26-year-old air engineering officer in the Royal Navy, decided to get the car ready to act as her wheels on her wedding day.
She succeeded, and the stunning vehicle complete with authentic bodyshell, steering wheel and speedometer took her to the church for her wedding recently.
The original Beetle cost her just £200 when she bought it in 2004 as a student, and she stripped it down to the chassis and added larger pistons and cylinders to the engine, increasing the size from its original 1285cc to a more appropriate 1776cc.
By the end, only the original chassis (which had to be shortened), the wheels and the engine remain of the old Volkswagen Beetle. The resulting Porsche even took on a new numberplate.
As a result of her hard work, she was able to be driven by dad Viv, 54, to her wedding on August 13 at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst to marry Rob Ashton, also 26, a captain in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers.
"My mum and dad have been buying various parts for the car for birthday and Christmas presents for the past 6 years so I am looking forward to getting some girly treats now."
