The latest top scoring cars for safety have been announced by car safety experts Euro NCAP.
Cars scoring top five-star results are the Audi A6, the BMW X3, the Chevrolet Aveo and Chevrolet Orlando, the Citroën DS5, the Hyundai i40, the Vauxhall Ampera, the Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet and Jetta.
Only the latest Kia Picanto didn't achieve top marks; the disappointing result compared to many of its city car rivals, was down to the fact that the Picanto is not fitted with Electronic Stability Control as standard across the range.
Proof of Euro NCAP's commitment to test plug-in and electric vehicles can be seen with the fact that the Vauxhall Ampera achieved a five-star rating because of its strong body structure, interior and restraint systems.
Chevrolet's Aveo and Orlando models received recognition for their whiplash and adult protection, after the last Aveo did badly in previous results.
Finally, the Hyundai i40, Volkswagen Golf Convertible and Volkswagen Jetta scored highly for child occupant protection.
