A new survey from Tripadvisor has revealed which cities are likely to break the bank, and which destinations are purse-friendly.

And there's no prizes for guessing which place came out the priciest: yup, the city of love (and piggy-bank-bashing), Paris.

Zurich was snapping at its heels in second place, while London was up there as the third most expensive city break in the world.

The 'Trip Index' compared everyday travel expenses like the cost of a short taxi ride, a night's accommodation in a four-star hotel, and the price of a cheese pizza, to determine which cities were most economical.

With Paris likely to set you back a daily average of £260, and London £179, bargain-savvy city-breakers might want to look at the other end of the scale.

Bangkok was the listed as the cheapest city to visit, leaving you just £67 out of pocket each day. Beijing (£71), Sharm El Sheikh (£76), Kuala Lumpur (£80) and Sofia (£81) were the other destinations rounding out the top five most reasonable destinations.

Zurich is where you'll find the most expensive taxi ride, with an eight kilometre journey costing a whopping $39.

Like a drink? Cape Town in South Africa is the place to be with dry martinis costing just $4 each.
