A beefed-up version of the Peugeot 508 estate will be displayed at the Frankfurt motor show, and is set to be the next of the company's cars to get a diesel hybrid engine.
The combination of a diesel engine and an electric motor will help the big Peugeot to a fuel economy of 67.1mpg and a CO2 rating of 109g/km. It will become only the second diesel electric hybrid to go on sale, following the 3008 Hybrid4 that is due to go on sale later this year.
The RXH is set to sit at the top of the 508 range, and is higher and wider than the estate version of the Ford Mondeo rival. It also comes with a four-wheel drive system, courtesy of its hybrid setup – the conventional engine powers the front wheels, while the electric motor works the rear ones.
This combines to produce a total power output of 200bhp, while the car is also capable of driving in a fully-electric mode.
The raised ride height, rugged styling additions, scuff plates and plastic sills mean that Peugeot sees it as the 508's equivalent to the Audi Allroad and the Volvo XC70. There is no word on pricing yet, although Peugeot has said it will be more expensive than the current priciest 508 estate at £29,975.
