Volkswagen touts its Race Touareg for production

Updated:

Volkswagen has revealed a road-legal version of its Dakar Rally-winning Touareg at the Qatar motor show - and even bragged that it may go into limited production.

The manufacturer has dubbed the specially-built show car "the world's most talented street-legal SUV" as it shares an officially approved version of the rally machine's chassis and powertrain.

The Race Touareg 3 also shares the rally car's carbon composite bodywork, but adds dramatic 18-inch BBS alloys to the standard motorsport features.

Despite the show car's striking appearance and 306bhp 2.5-litre diesel engine, company officials told Autocar that the Touareg could yet be produced in very limited numbers, and claimed all the tooling data for the model's bespoke interior has been stored as it would for any conventional design project.

The car's interior features the only major modifications from the rally version, where the stripped-out appearance has been embellished with leather upholstery, carbon trim and engraved aluminium.

If Volkswagen is really serious about building the Race Touareg, we can't imagine a better place to drum up interest than amongst the oil-rich, SUV-obsessed Qatari population.
