Just as the year lurches into three months of interminable grey skies, Lamborghini unveils a car good enough to make a grit 'n' salt salesman yearn for summer.
The new Gallardo LP 570-4 Spyder Performante is a tweaked, tuned and lightened version of the already fabulous standard car.
If that sounds much like the Superleggera model Lamborghini has already introduced then you're right on the money. The manufacturer describes the cars as 'brothers' as the Performante owes its new kerbweight to the liberal use of carbon fibre both inside and out.
With large parts of the car now cast from every supercar maker's favourite material, the new Spyder weighs almost 65kg less than the standard model at a dry 1485kg.
If that wasn't enough to provoke the saliva glands, Lamborghini has also adjusted the aerodynamics for better downforce and fitted new lightweight 19-inch alloys.
The 5.2-litre V10 engine beneath it all keeps its 562bhp output, but the car is marginally quicker than standard thanks to the weight loss. The Performante sprints to 62mph in just 3.9 seconds and onto a top speed of 201mph.
