Mercedes SLS AMG to be 2010 Formula One safety car

Updated

Mercedes new SLS AMG supercar will lead motor racing's elite as the official safety car for the 2010 Formula One season.

The car will appear at all 19 of this year's races, starting at Bahrain in two weeks time, with former touring car-driver Bernd Maylander at the wheel.

The SLS will have to keep 24 rampaging F1 cars behind it, but thanks to its 6.2-litre V8 AMG engine it can get from 0-62mph in 3.8 seconds, so it shouldn't have too tough a job.

It goes on sale in the UK this summer priced from £157,000.
