Volkswagen has confirmed that a twin-charged GTI version of its Polo supermini will be joining the range this summer.

It will be powered by a 1.4-litre TSI petrol engine that will use a supercharger up to 3000rpm, at which point a turbocharger takes over. The whole setup means the Polo boasts a 178bhp power output and 184 lb ft of pulling power that takes it to 62mph in just 6.9 seconds. Despite this performance, the GTI still manages a very impressive 47mpg and an emissions rating of 139g/km.

As well as the engine upgrades the Polo gets 15mm lower suspension, new brakes, springs and dampers, an electronic limited slip differential and 17-inch alloy wheels. It will only come with the highly competent seven-speed DSG gearbox, as this is lighter than the manual six-speed alternative.
