Pastrana breaks world record for longest rally car jump

Updated

Driving a car is normally the last thing you'd want be doing on New Year's Eve, but that was the night that X Games legend Travis Pastrana chose to smash the world record for the longest jump in a rally car.

Pastrana's Subaru Impreza STi flew from a specially built ramp in Long Beach, California at 91mph, to touchdown on a barge that had been moored in the harbour, some 269 feet away.

Despite crashing into the barge's retaining wall, Pastrana emerged from the car entirely unhurt, and, in typical style, celebrated the jump with a casual back flip into the water. The new record beats the previous record (set by Subaru stable mate, Ken Block) by just shy of 100 feet.

The challenge was undertaken as part of Red Bull's New Year, No Limits series.
