Retro perfection: Mini Clubman tows Airstream

Updated

Who could ever forget the legendary Bubble from Airstream, those silver caravans that graced the American highways in the 50s and 60s? Now designers at the upmarket Danish furniture company 'Republic of Fritz Hansen' have launched not one but two revamped retros onto the market. The project sees its world premiere at the Salone del Mobile trade fair in Milan between 22nd and 27th April 2009.

Airstream is the world's longest-established manufacturer of mobile homes for leisure purposes, and the Mini Cooper Clubman is the perfect choice of vehicle to tow this iconic caravan. Indeed, the combination is somewhat reminiscent of the mobile auto-surf legend Ford Sportsman Woody – with its Tudor-style half-timbered body, now a priceless vintage car. The interior of the trailer has been designed to reflect the lifestyle of the surf-and-sun brigade. In order to give this odd couple a uniform visual theme, the 6.7-metre-long caravan bears identical design features to the Mini. Prime timber from the yacht building trade was used for the furnishings. A cosy corner for guests and a 'daybed' for extended sunbathing are also part of the spec. Maybe time to reconsider your holiday preference for 5-star hotels?
