Britain's Got Talent star Sydnie Christmas has shut down claims she starred on the West End.
The singer, 28, got the first Golden Buzzer of Britain's Got Talent's new series after she wowed the judges with her vocals. Having been inspired by Celebrity Big Brother and West End star Marisha Wallace, she sang Tomorrow from the iconic musical Annie.
Social media was awash with fans claiming to have seen Christmas has had a career in the West End. Among the comments, one person wrote: "Sydnie Christmas is a professional singer/actress already working in the West End. Thought #bgt was for amateurs not professional. She’s taken golden buzzer off someone more deserving."
Not shying away from the drama, the TV contestant has addressed her professional singing career during a discussion with Lorraine. While she said she hasn't been on the West End, she confessed that it is her dream to be a leading lady on stage.
What, how and why?
Lorraine Kelly didn't shy away from the complaints as she opened the interview addressing the West End claims. She said: "You have been grafting away, you have done the cruise ships, you've never been on the West End though?"
"No!" Christmas exclaimed.
"You've never done any of that," Kelly added. "You've always wanted to. This is your dream isn't it?"
Christmas shared her dreams of taking to the West End stage. "I just aspire to, I want to be a leading lady," she said. "That's the dream! That's the aim."
Clearly impressed with the Britain's Got Talent audition, Kelly gave her guest some encouragement. "And so you can be, as we saw there," she said. "I must admit I'm with Simon Cowell there, you absolutely - gosh, I sound like one of the judges now - made it your own. You really did."
Christmas said: "The first time I heard that version, Marisha Wallace done that version and I heard it. I was like I've got to give this a go. It was just amazing. The song speaks to so many people doing it. Doing it as an adult, doing it the way Marisha done it, has a totally different meaning."
The singer shared why she took the leap to appear on Britain's Got Talent. She said: "Just to open a door. To try. Let's have it. Let's give it a go."
Sydnie Christmas' professional singing
Christmas completed her course at D&B Academy of Performing Arts in London in 2014. The Britain's Got Talent star has worked as a singer on cruise ships including the Royal Caribbean International. She has appeared on TV before too with appearances in Kick Ass 2 movie and reality show Stage School, according to her stage bio.
In London, the singer took to the stage in musical Lazarus which features David Bowie's music at the King's Cross Theatre. Her bio for Lazarus read: "Credits include: Lead Vocalist travelling the world in the show Star Water for Royal Caribbean Cruise Quantum of the Seas, Kick Ass 2 (Feature Film) & Sarah in Can You Keep a Secret (Short Film). Sydnie can be seen on TV reality drama series Stage School (E4)."
Plus, Christmas starred in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Starlight Express in Bochum, Germany in 2019.
Following her performance on Britain's Got Talent, Christmas said she was "pinching herself". She said: "I was pinching myself. I thought this couldn't be real... This doesn't happen to people like me. I have wanted to do this forever. To be on stage, entertain, perform and sing."
